According to a latest research report released by Columbia Engineering Center of the Earth, burning all destined for the U.S. landfill waste, including plastics, can create enough energy for 14 million families.
This means that each year will be shipped to the landfill waste into energy supplies to power stations to meet the electricity demand of nearly 12% of U.S. households.
The study sponsored by the American Chemistry Council. According to the report, accounting for about 11% of plastic trash tide.
Total recovery of about 16.6 percent plastic, this data includes recycling and energy recovery. In other words, 16 pounds in one pound of plastic is recycled.
"These important findings show that despite our progress, but there is still a great opportunity to recycle more valuable materials." Vice president of the American Chemistry Council Plastics Division Steve Russell said in a statement.
Garbage is not the only way to extract energy incineration. Report also pointed out that if all plastics are not recycled plastic oil transformed by technology, can produce 6 billion gallons of gasoline.
According to the report estimated that in 2011 the United States has 247 million tons of garbage was sent to landfill, higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated value of 112.7 million tons. This is because the report covers the types of garbage wider range than the EPA, for example, including construction and demolition debris, packaging waste and municipal wastewater sludge imported goods.
The report also pointed out that compared to 2008, in 2011, up 21% recovery of plastic, close to 2.7 million tons.
