EU research and development of innovative self-healing polymer materials

Recently, the European SHINE self-healing polymer materials research and innovation Public Private Partnership (PPP) organization developed a variety of polymer elastomeric material, the seventh EU research framework program (FP7) provides a 400 million euros aid, total R & D invested 620 million euros.


The organization by the EU member states and 12 companies formed polymer, it has successfully developed a variety of innovative elastomeric materials include: epoxy resin based on self-healing supramolecular elastomer material, based on reversible covalent bond Self-healing cross-linked structure thermoset elastomer material, self-healing and self-repairing material nanoparticles nanoparticle composites.


The organization developed an innovative self-healing material, shall be restored to the original material to ensure that the material was originally set to feature more than 60%, mainly R & D goals are used in manufacturing of self-healing ionic polymer elastomeric material and applied Neutron scattering experiments deuterium-based polymer elastomeric material, other self-healing elastomer material development, including commercial applications for wind turbines and automotive industry seal, damping or noise reduction applied to roads and bridges, used in asphalt pavement to extend the road life.


Self-healing function of elastomeric material (Elastomer Materials), usually by a covalent bond based on a crosslinked structure polymer material can be widely used in sealing, damping, reduce noise and prolong the life of physical materials and other fields. This material does not change the physical and chemical properties of the original material material premise introducing atoms or ions chemical covalent bond, and maintain homeostasis between the covalent bond structure, which has a body like a living tissue inherent self-healing capabilities.
